How Often Should Carpets Be Cleaned? A Simple Schedule

Your carpet does not look dirty, so you put it off. Then someone asks when you last had it cleaned and you cannot remember. So how often should carpets be cleaned? The answer depends on your house. There is no single rule that fits everyone. Here is a schedule you can use, plus the signs that say it is time no matter what the calendar says.

How often should carpets be cleaned professionally?

For most homes, every 12 to 18 months. That is what the Carpet and Rug Institute recommends. The group sets the care standards for the carpet industry. Most carpet makers say something close to it. Many warranties require it, so keep your receipts. A warranty claim can ask for proof.

That is the baseline. Utah homes often land at the short end of it. The air here is dry and full of fine dust most of the year. From late fall through spring the windows stay shut, so what gets tracked in tends to stay in.

A schedule that fits your house

Start at 12 to 18 months. Then move up or down based on who lives there.

• Two adults, no pets, shoes off at the door: every 18 months
• A family with kids: once a year
• Pets in the house: every 6 months
• Someone with allergies or asthma: every 6 months
• A rental, or a home that hosts a lot: every 6 months, or between tenants
• A room nobody really uses: every 2 years is fine

Traffic sets the number, not square footage. Count the feet that cross a room in a week. The hallway and the path from the back door will need it long before the guest room does.

How often should you shampoo your carpet yourself?

A rented machine or a home carpet shampooer is a different question. Two or three times a year is plenty. Doing it more often works against you, for two reasons.

First, a home machine puts down more water than it pulls back up. Water that soaks into the backing and the pad takes a long time to leave. Damp carpet starts to smell.

Second, home shampoo is soap heavy. Soap left in the fibers stays sticky, and sticky fibers grab dirt. The carpet gets dirty faster than it did before you started.

If you do shampoo, use about half the soap the bottle calls for. Then go over the room again with plain water and no soap. Point a fan at the floor until it is dry.

How to keep carpet clean in between

Most carpet wear is grit. Sand and fine dust settle at the base of the fibers. Every step cuts them a little more. Getting that grit out is the whole job.

• Vacuum once a week, and twice a week in hallways and the path from the door
• Put a mat outside and inside every door, and shake them out often
• Take shoes off inside. It is the single biggest change you can make
• Blot spills right away with a dry towel. Press down, do not scrub
• Shift the couch a few inches once in a while so one lane does not take all the traffic

Signs it is time, whatever the calendar says

Your carpet will tell you before the date does. Watch for these.

• The lanes between rooms look darker than the carpet along the walls
• A spot you cleaned keeps coming back a few weeks later
• The room smells stale on a damp day, or when the furnace first kicks on
• Allergies feel worse inside the house than outside it
• The carpet feels stiff or crunchy under bare feet

Any one of those means the soil has settled below the surface, where a vacuum cannot reach. That is the point where hot water extraction is worth paying for.
